About

Manjushree Hermitage

The Manjushree Hermitage is a place for people to come for regular Buddhist meditation, study, practice, and retreat in Northwest Indiana.  The center brings the Buddhist teachings of Venerable Shyangwa Tulku Lama Rinpoche (Shangpa Rinpoche) and other Master teachers of the Karma Kagyu lineage.

Manjushree Hermitage is a volunteer run center that is fully dependent upon donations. There are no paid staff, and volunteers do all the work to keep programs running and the facilities maintained and improved. Your generosity helps make Manjushree Hermitage programs possible. Thank you.

Shangpa Rinpoche

Shangpa Rinpoche is the reincarnation of the First Shangpa Rinpoche, the latter’s compassionate activities have touched many in Tibet and Nepal. The current Shangpa Rinpoche was recognized as the incarnation of the past Shangpa Rinpoche by His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje. From a young age, he has gone through lots of hardship growing up. When he was 9 years old, he entered the monastic life. At the age of eleven years, he was ordained as a monk by His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa.

Shangpa Rinpoche received the basic monastic training from the previous Dupsing Rinpoche in Jangchub Choeling Monastery and basic education from a local Tibetan school. When he was 17 years old, he attended Higher Buddhist Education at the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi, India.

Later at His holiness 16th Karmapa’s instruction, the young Shangpa Rinpoche was appointed as the head of Jangchub Choeling monastery. Subsequently, with instructions from HH Shamarpa Mipham Chokyi Lodro, Shangpa Rinpoche was appointed as the abbot of Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre in Singapore.
